New Format
I’m playing around with the formatting of The Bored Vegetarian, which is going terribly so far. If anyone has any recommendations, please let me know… as I type this, the theme makes every post look like it was written on wide-ruled paper.
Horrible!!
Someone design me something nice!! Or at least suggest a better theme.
Edit: My brother has graciously offered his design...

Stuffed French Toast
Look at these strawberries I picked up today!
Since I was up early for a ill-conceived McCarren run this morning, I figured I might as well make breakfast when I got home. I’ve made stuffed french toast in the past, most recently for last year’s Pre-Easter Brunch Dinner Party (what??) Usually I use cream cheese and jam, but I thought I’d experiment a bit this time. I had...

Baked Polenta with Heirloom Tomato Salad
I’m convinced that my friend Melissa spends as much time staring wide-eyed at recipes online as I do. She sends me ideas several times a week - either things she has made, wants to make, or places where she wants to eat. The latest was this Baked Polenta recipe that she found on Epicurious. What’s great about a basic polenta is that you can go as wild as you want with the...

MeatlessLoaf Dinner
After what turned out to be a pretty epic weekend of seeing Damien Jurado and North Highlands live, attending the Mermaid Parade on Coney Island and jumping into the Atlantic Ocean, a slow Sunday has been a welcomed change. Plus it’s hot (again!) I know my friends in Washington have been suffering through an epically bad start to summer, so I won’t discuss the weather too much…...

Copy Cat
Every once in a while, when dining at a restaurant, I’ll pull out a pen and paper (oh fine, I pull out my iPhone) and jot down the ingredients of whatever delicious thing I’m eating so that I can recreate it at home. I’ve done this twice in the last couple of weeks - once at Rick Bayless’(!) Frontera Grill in Chicago, and then again at Back Forty in the East Village. My...

Easy Cheesey
The other day I was telling a friend about my food guilt complex. Let me explain: If I take shortcuts (i.e. using canned vegetables) I feel like a horrible person. Okay, not a horrible person, but a lazy cook. I like the idea of everything being made from scratch, even if it takes longer. Today I bought frozen peas for a soup I’m making tomorrow and had to tell myself that it was alright...
Fruit Loopy
Martin and Kenneth have been bringing me gifts of fruit since they arrived on Wednesday. First it was this unidentified smiley melon (all it says on the sticker is “orange flesh,” so I suspect it’s some sort of cantaloupe): Thursday was a pair of mangoes that were quickly chopped up into a salsa, and yesterday Martin texted me “left a pineapple in your ...

Impromptu Picnic
Last night was so lovely that Emma and I decided to meet up in McCarren after work for some chit chat and a light picnic. Luckily, my dear Danish house guests had brought me some mangoes earlier in the day, which gave me the idea to make my mom’s Mango Salsa. It’s sweet and refreshing, perfect for the hot weather. I’d also been itching to try out a recipe I scooped at Whole...
